Police in the self-declared republic of Somaliland have arrested a TV reporter at Hargeisa airport, a journalists union body has said.
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) said it condemns the arrest of Najib Abdi, a Universal TV reporter who was detained at the airport upon returning from Mogadishu.
Universal is a London-based television broadcasting to Somalis in the Horn of Africa region and the diaspora.
Police gave no explanation as to why the journalist was detained but it could be linked with his stay in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, where he has been based in the last one month.
Harassment and intimidation against Somali journalists have become widespread across the country and have been targeted by the government and other armed groups.
