A group of Somali academics and security experts have come together to launch a new think tank that will produce policy ideas and research papers on key security and stability issues relating to the Horn of Afrzica region.
Hiraal Institute says it “will conduct research on issues of national security in order to support and counsel Somalia’s security institutions and provide an objective analysis of their activities and appropriate recommendations“.

“Hiraal is a Somali word which means to journey towards a better place, and doing the necessary actions to ensure the destination is safely reached. The word perfectly captures the aim of this institute.”
On Friday, the institute released its first paper, titled the Evolution of al-Shabab.

In 2013, Somalia’s first think tank, the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies (HIPS), was established in Mogadishu to advise the Somali government, international organizations, and other local actors.
