The Masjid Abubakar Committee in Eastleigh, Nairobi, has embarked on an ambitious 950 million ($9.5 millions) shilling expansion plan to upgrade its facilities to cater for the increasing need of the local Muslim faithful.
The project, located in Eastleigh Sixth Street, will include a ten-storey modern mosque to enhance on the capacity of the mosque to serve the spiritual and educational needs of the growing population.
The first phase will cost Sh 350 million with the second phase estimated to cost Sh600 million, respectively. The project is expected to funded locally and Sh205 million already raised.
Speaking last Thursday during the laying of the foundation stone the National Assembly majority Leader Aden Duale urged the Muslim community in Eastleigh to work with security agencies in maintaining law and order and help contain insecurity cases in their neighbourhood.
Duale said that through such social security measures that will bridge the gap between communities and local security agents.
The legislator pointed out that Islam is a religion of peace and it encourages tolerance and dialogue and advised residents in Eastleigh to be tolerant and live in peace with other Kenyans.
He further applauded the role Muslim scholars and religious leaders are playing in conveying the teachings of Islam and appealed for them to support the Government in the fight against radicalization of young people.
“My gratitude goes to Muslim scholars, the Muslim religious leaders for the concerted efforts and support in enhancing the Muslim youths and grooming them for future leadership. I wish to encourage you as community leaders to continue providing guidance for youth to improve on their outstanding achievements and remarkable personal growth,” Duale said.
The Majority Leader added that the propaganda being peddled by the terrorist groups is aimed at causing desperation among the Kenyan youth so that they can be easily recruited into the group.
Duale who is also the Garissa Township Member of Parliament said that Islam and Muslims are undergoing tough time because of the acts by criminals and urged the youth to desist from being recruited into criminal groups.
In attendance during the foundation stone laying event were Sheikh Muhammad Umal, Sheikh Muhammad Osman among other Muslim scholars.
