Former Somali refugee wins Democratic primary for US House race

Former Somali refugee Ilhan Omar has won the Democratic congressional race in Minnesota.

Ilhan Omar now serves in the Minnesota House of representatives where she was elected two years ago.

Omar will become the first Somali-American elected to the US Congress if she wins in November.

“Tonight we are celebrating because we engaged and empowered our community and we won,” Omar said in a statement.

Representative Keith Ellison left the seat to run for state attorney general.

The US Congress is likely to have two Muslim women after the mid-term elections in November. Rashida Tlaib – a Palestinian-America – is running unopposmar after winning a Detroit- are Democratic primary in Michigan.

At least 90 Muslims are running for political office.
