Ethiopia has freed a senior Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) official who was controversially extradited from Somalia last year.
Last August, Somalia handed over Abdikarim Sheikh Muse, also known as Qalbi Dhagah, to Ethiopia after arresting him in the central Somali town of Galkayo.
Ethiopia’s government considers the ONLF a “terrorist organisation”.
Qalbi Dhagah’s arrest and subsequent extradition outraged nationalist Somalis across the world.
A traditional clan elder in Ethiopia’s Somali region has confirmed the ONLF leader’s release to the Voice of America.
Qalbi Dhagah lived in Somalia’s capital for years and his supporters say he holds dual Somali-Ethiopian citizenship.
