A friendly match between Argentina and Israel which was due to be played on Saturday in Jerusalem has been cancelled following pressure over the plight of Palestinian civilians, reports say.
The match was meant to act as a warm-up game for Argentina ahead of the Fifa World Cup in Russia.
Argentina and Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain told US sport channel ESPN that the game had been abandoned.
“They’ve finally done the right thing,” he said.
Israel’s embassy in Argentina confirmed the cancellation of the tie on Twitter.
Al Jazeera reported that the stadium in which the match was to be played is built on land that was once a Palestinian village that was destroyed in 1948.
Argentinian sports website Minutouno reported that the friendly had been “suspended” amid an “escalation of violence, threats and criticism” directed at captain ‘Leo’ Messi.
